What Is a Diminished Chord?

A diminished chord is built by stacking minor 3rd intervals. There are three types:

Diminished triad (dim): Root – b3 – b5. Three notes.
Diminished 7th (dim7 or °7): Root – b3 – b5 – bb7. Four notes, all equally spaced.
Half-diminished (m7b5 or ø7): Root – b3 – b5 – b7. Minor 7th instead of diminished 7th.

Moveable Diminished 7th Shapes

Here’s the magic of dim7 chords: because all intervals are equal (minor 3rds), every inversion looks the same. A single shape moved up 3 frets gives you the same chord with a different root.

Shape 1 (root on 5th string): X-root-b3(+2 frets on 4th)-b5(+1 fret on 3rd)-bb7(+2 frets on 2nd)

This means there are really only three unique diminished 7th chords — each one repeated four times across the neck:

– Dbdim7 = Edim7 = Gdim7 = Bbdim7
– Ddim7 = Fdim7 = Abdim7 = Bdim7

How to Use Diminished Chords

As Passing Chords

The most common use. Place a diminished chord between two chords a whole step apart:
C – C#dim – Dm (the dim connects C to Dm chromatically)

As a Dominant Substitute

A dim7 chord built on the leading tone functions like a dominant 7th:
Bdim7 can replace G7 when resolving to C major.
